The Foster Journey
США
Добавлен 1 фев 2009
Hi! We're a family of 3, working and cruising full-time. We sold our suburban life in 2020, sailed the US East Coast from Texas, and just wrapped up in the Bahamas. Now we're off to distant seas, learning as we go, and having a blast!
In these weekly videos, you're invited to come along with us.
We want to go all over the world and are working hard to carefully craft a long-term lifestyle. You're invited to watch as we share the journey from suburbia to sailing freely.

After a week anchored at Atlantic Highlands, NJ, we head north through the inner New York Harbor. Spending the night behind the statue of liberty was everything we didn't expect (in a good way). And the whirlpool at Hell Gate was something else we didn't expect. Join us in this episode as we head to Port Washington, NY. Cheers, Matt SV Cadence Thanks for tuning in this week! For a bunch of Texans, this is NOT normal - sailing offshore in 300 foot of visibility, dense Atlantic Ocean fog. But what starts out as a calm foggy motor, turned into a wonderful sail. We left Cape May NJ in the morning and arrived at Atlantic Highlands around 2am. Cheers, Matt SV Cadence Long Island, Bahamas

Beautiful boat and great rig😊
How long does it take you to deploy it?
@@MadMarv. About 5 minutes.
@@TheFosterJourney just thought of an inappropriate joke since I didn't specify deploying what. Fair winds
I want one. Bring on the apocalypse. I wanna be free!
Number 2! Look at those lines.
Looks like so much fun. can't believe the bull gets so many visitors... lol
@@docjeffry lol...it was nonstop wait in line,
Sorry we missed you! We're anchored up in Martha's Vineyard! Are you heading south or staying up in the area for a bit? Then I just remembered there is probably a bit of lag time between video and actual location.
The train ride from where you started would have been more interesting to me personally. My mother and sisters-in-law plus my Goddaughter live there. I don't think I have been there since 2020. We were all just in Ecuador a couple of weeks ago which is where my wife's family is from. It was really good for us all to be together again. Anyhow, when we were in New York we went all over the place, but I was sadly not that impressed for some reason, I think it is because we were only there for a week. It was interesting, but nothing like the movies make it out to be, but of course everything looks better in the movies. LOL I'm happy you had a good time there and not to say I did not, but again I don't feel we were there long enough. Well for me anyway. My wife had lived there for a time before I met her. I will say this though. In my opinion Quito, the capital of Ecuador is WAY busier traffic wise than New York. Maybe I didn't get the full New York traffic experience, but man, Quito's traffic is something else.
Love it
small - OK yacht - and no its not the best for sailing around the world. If you knew what you were talking about - there is a bit of an "Arrived formula" - equipment required + your endurance needed + minimum safties - as a function of water line length. 31 foot moderate to heavy displacement doesn't cut it. - Can this sail around the world - of course it can. you can do that in an off beach catamaran. your internal volume more properly needs to be late 30ft with beam to suit.
Been there in the early 90s.. seen Time Square etc. do have to say that the small business pizza place was some of the best pizza I have ever eaten. And there were this local bottling company that had cola, root beer, orange, etc. but they were all clear ie no color yet tasted just like the name said. It was mind boggling to see a clear drink but when you drank it it taste like a root beer or cola.
We had so much fun...day 2 in manhattan didn't make the cut. But we'll share more next week. Thanks for watching!
So many contrasts...and yet most are invisible from a car or train.
Yeah, how seaworthy is she in surprise surprise 60ft plus seas????
Long keel boats don't point as good
I think a 31 foot boat is a bit to small
There's this nautical saying "gentleman don't sail in fowl weather" and if one only sailed in nice calm down winds using a spinnaker would that qualify him or her as of gentlemanly character lol. I watched one sailor who was instructing a couple cute ladies on how to sail his boat, and during the instruction he told one with a little more experience to "turn off a breaker" which she thought she quickly did correctly. She had turned off the auto pilot and they had a spinnaker up so all of a sudden the boat leans almost to 45 degrees ! The spinnaker was almost entirely at a 90 degree ! No damage done, at least if a pot fell off the stove they didn't talk about it ! He eventually married that cute lady with the wrong breaker experience.
@@californiakayaker what a story!
Great job, Captain!
Are there a lot of lobster pots?
To us, no - there aren't a lot. There are a LOT of PEOPLE who complain about the pots. I guess it's relative. We're used to sailing Galveston where you have to watch for oyster reefs and the Bahamas where you have to watch for rocks. So watching for lobster pots isn't a big to us. To other sailors, you'd think it was the end of the world.
234 and yours
Why not? One for each major crusing area, sounds good to me!
Awesome!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice job. A perfect review for next year, when I duplicate your steps north from my home port of Reedville in the Chesapeake Bay.
Sounds great! Thx for watching
Pure nostalgia. In 1986 we sailed from Annapolis to NYC for the relighting of Lady Liberty. Then on to Newport etc. etc.. NY harbor was filled with US Navy, Tall Ships, and thousands of pleasure craft. Regan flipped the switch and the torch lit up, and we hauled anchor to sail the south side of Long Island to Montauk Point. We get too fascinated with the tropics when we have some really great cruising here at home. Did you have “steamers” in Atlantic Highlands?
@@johnlatimer72 so true about the tropics. We're in love with the northern US East Coast.
I’ll take a full keel for sure
Have you had a chance to play with a Sexton while at sea?
No, we don't own one.
Howdy! Well done. How has everything held up so far? Does current flowing through the AGM battery affect its lifespan? Thanks
The AGM is holding its charge well. Over two years on it. The lithiums are still good as new. 👍💯 Best electric upgrade, bar none
@ygautier6866 Thank you very much for the update. I'm glad to hear it. This is super helpful for our project. Best to your family and fair winds! 👍
Great call yes...31ft is perfect for single handing ...I've single handed my 30ft sailboat for the last 20 or so years...anything larger would be tough...sail handling, anchoring etc...
What about the Sparkman & Stevens 34? A young 16 year old Aussie girl chose the s&s design to sail successfully around the world alone and non stop. Her name is Jessica Watson.
Ellas pink lady was one hell of a boat But while its a great design There are boats with better aspects. Dont forget that her trip wasnt easy
We cruised the ICW over 14 years going to bahamas virgins islands dry tortugas and that Cove with the base it was always noisey. Then dad who's been a Capt since 78 went on to buy a house in Okracoke and charter the 2 boats he has. I went on to the military for 25 years and then SAR. Have a rentle in Beaufort Enjoy your trips.
hell gate isnt that bad if you come back this way go up the hudson and check out croton bay or go furthe up to west point good marinas MYC with deep water
The Catalina 387 of course !
If we didn’t have our boat probably a cross between 2 and 3 , 2 is beautiful and 3 has the stay sail which could be useful
Alright, 🙌✔️

👍🙌
Which sailboat or powerboat would you take? If we didn't have Cadence, we would take....first you tell me.
I am willing to bet a cockpit conversation was the inspiration for this clip. I'm curious: Did you meet any of those crews?
😊 this conversation always happens when we're surrounded by beautiful boats (sail and power)
It's a nice enough boat but I'm looking for something with a dingy davit. Nice video! Thanks.
Good luck!
You got lucky on the lady liberty anchorage. When we stayed there, we rolled from rail to rail for hours, and the helicopter noise was horendous. It was definitely a one time thing for us. 😂
We have just enough wind to keep the roll down.
When are you headed south again, assumming you are not going to winter up north.?
Heading south before the Fall fronts get too cold.
Great episode. Really gave us a different perspective of the area. That skyline at night behind the boat was spectacular.
Thx for the comment...the skyline was surreal!
am looking at flexible 100W or so solar panels. Noticed your set on the Bimini. What kind? Satisfied? Thanks! Been to Annapolis and St Michaels. Now I'll add some of your other suggestions.

22:04 Yeah as i approach the locks tugs and barges lined the bank's for1/2 mile turns out the locks had been closed due to flooding. The lock master sent me through OMG I'm steering for the opening on the opposite side very quickly I'm pointing down river and had lost 100 feet down river I get her pointed upriver full throttle making very little headway and if I got impatient and turned towards the cut on the far bank I would loose a lot of ground . I was scared . The barges would have to start a twist before exiting the channel and into the river which was not easy given the narrow exit . With the barge pointing upriver upon exiting the river they would have to let the head fall off and crash into the bulkhead and force the rest of the barges and tow through. Shortly after we exited the area we heard a pon pon that several barges were floating free down river
@@sartorst3376 geesh, flood currents are no joke! Glad you made it through safely.
Looking forward to seeing this episode later today. After Debbie finishes slamming my house.
@@MadMarv. Stay dry!
I learned to sail on the Hudson and NY Harbor, out of Lower Manhattan. I was just sailing there today! We race there too. It's intense. Lot's of traffic, wind shifts, and currents, but you get used to it. I've seen quite a few people get their asses kicked in Hell Gate. Good job timing the tide and current (and not hitting the bridge)!
Seeing NY via water ways is so Cool!
Yes, it is!
We just came through the East River a week ago. The other direction! Fun trip!
Did it a couple years ago, incredible but totally get the nerve wracking part. It’s not a standard day on the water for sure!
We so what to do this !
We have a shallow draft Corsair F24mkII trimaran sailboat which we camp with. I want to research sailing from pensacola to tampa, but I just cannot seem to find info. Our plans are for staying close to shore which is a different route than most Great Loopers. I need tips and warnings for my trip planning. Anyone know of a good resource?
